Knowledge about wicks
The flammability of a candle is depended by 2 paramters
a) Purity and quality of the beeswax
The reason is the different quality and purity of the beeswax. The left tealight and the left candles were made by industriell cleaned beeswax. The right tealight and right candle were made by simple cleaned beeswax.
The impurities is fouling the wick more and more, while the wax was burning. You can see this effect extremely by smaler candles or tealights. Our tip: If you have bought wax or cleaned your own wax, test the purity with this test by making tealights. But the effect you can sometimes see after 10 minutes or 1 h, dependent of the amount of the impurities. After few minutes, you can not seen a different in all cases.
b) Quality of the wick and the correct diameter of the wick (Wick Number)
Our wicks are specials producted for using beeswax.
But how you can find the correct diameter of the wick (Wick Number).
1) First step: Measure the biggest diameter of the candle. Round the amount.
For expamle: 3,7 cm => 4 cm (rounded diameter) or 8,2 cm => 8 cm (rounded diameter).
2) But the rounded diameter at the biggest candle position was not the "wick number".
Attention: By 1-5 cm roundet diameter was the wick number the same number. For example: rounded diameter 3 cm = wick number 3.
But if you have a rounded diameter from 5 or more cm, you must added "2".
For example: rounded diameter 11 cm, than the wick number was 13 (11+2).
If you have not the correct diameter, you can use the next upper or lower wick number
For example: You need number 7. You can use 6 oder 8. If possible, use the upper number.
Attention:
This procedure for calculate the wick number was used from us by using our wicks. We don`t know, if this procedure was the same by the wicks of other sellers. If you make a new candle, it is necessary to proof the wick number by making a burning test with the candle.
Attention: Our wicks have a burning direction.
If you use the wrong direction, the candle was not burning or burns not good.
Therefore the "top side" (flame side) was marked by a knot
By coils, the "top side" (flame side) was the outer end, which offen is fixed by a needle (lock at the photo).
Attention
For making candles by dipping procedure, on used "flat-wicks". This wicks has not a burning direction. On can used this type of wick also by casting candles with stearine or paraffine instead beeswax.
